William Lim graduated from Cornell University in USA, worked in Boston for 5 years before returning to Hong Kong in 1987. In 1993, he assumed the position of Managing Director at CL3 Architects Ltd.

As part of the tourism revival campaign, the Hong Kong Tourism Board organized a month-long activity around the theme of the Mid-Autumn Festival during September 2003. One of the signature elements of the campaign was the commissioning of a design for Hong Kong’s biggest ever lantern display. The lantern was to showcase the uniqueness of Hong Kong as a travel destination and to promote the international image of the city.

The structure is both simple and complex. The materials used incorporate the five Chinese elements of wood, fire, earth, metal and water. Taking inspiration from Hong Kong’s unique scaffolding industry, bamboo was used as the main construction material. The structure takes the form of a half sphere 15 metres high by 35 metres wide and contains a 360° projection screen with state-of-the-art AV and lighting displays. This in itself was a great engineering challenge, let alone the fact that it had to be built in just 12 days.
